Just received word that our good friends, Cheryl and Carol at Platte County Visitors Bureau have convinced Kansas City Power and Light to donate 6,000 bottles of water to KC 2000! I'll be working on the logistics of this in the next few days.

The Welcome Party will recreate a political party convention. Each "state" will be called on to give a roll call report of the number of members and Model A's from that state. Each state must select a "speaker" to give the report. (The speaker will get the attendance info from our Registrar, Bob Hess, who will have a printout available in the room) Something like, "Mr. Chairman, the great state of Colorado...home of John Elway, the Rocky Mountains, Coors Beer and the US Air Force Academy, proudly reports 115 hearty Model A members and 85 Model A Cars and Trucks!". All your people go to cheering and the band strikes up a tune about Colorado (if they know one, if not they'll do Happy Days are Here Again, or some other uptempo song). We will provide a sign for each state and country attending and each person will get one of those fake straw hats as they enter the room. After the roll call, welcomes, and any other business, we move some tables and go to dancing. This is an 8 piece orchestra, plus two additional singers, that do big band and swing type tunes.

We think its going to be lots of funs, with cheering, music, dancing and some silliness. Let me know if you have any other questions.

ps: Don't forget your club banners...they will be displayed prominently in the hq hotel.

The A400 Group has requested time and space at KC 2000 for a special interest group meeting and we are happy to accomodate them. Tim Johnstone from Texas will lead the meeting, which will be held on Friday, July 14, 2000 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. in Room E, at the Embassy Suites-KCI Hotel. This is a free event for registered attendees.

Please pass the word to any A400 owners who may have an interest.

Due to the popularity of the KC Blues and BBQ Night at KC 2000 the first night sold out quickly. We have been able to schedule a second Blues and BBQ Night at the Grand Emporium on Thursday, July 13th. Members registering now for KC 2000 and signing up for the Tuesday Blues and BBQ will be sent a notice advising them that the first one sold out and that we have put them on the second night. If they have a problem with that they can get a full refund by request.

We topped the 400 mark for registrations on March 1st! Get your reservations in and tell your pals to do the same.

Date: Friday, February 18, 2000

Our KC 2000 Registrar, Bob Hess, has informed me that we have reached 400 people for the KC Blues and Bar B Que on Tuesday, July 11, 2000. This is the maximum number that the Grand Emporium can handle. Any new convention registrations received that sign up for this event will have their money refunded. As of today, we are nearing 400 convention registrations.

Date: Saturday, February 5, 2000

Ross Milne from Brampton, Ontario, will lead a meeting of members interested in the restoration of 180-A's at KC 2000. For those who don't know (as I didn't) the 180-A's are 1931 2-door Deluxe Phaetons. They represent one of the more difficult restorations as there were a number of "features" unique to the 180-A only and not a lot of examples to work from. Their meeting will be held on Friday, July 14, 2000 at 12 noon at the Embassy Suites KCI in Room E and is open to anyone with an interest.

Date: Thu, 2/3/00

Just received word that all of the rooms at the Embassy Suites KCI Hotel, our Headquarters Hotel for KC 2000 are booked. There is a possiblity to get on a list for any cancellations, if you want to try, but officially it is sold out. Please pass the word and save some people a long distance call. There are ample hotel rooms still available in nearby (and lower priced) facilities.

Wonderful People:

I am happy to let you know that all the items we need to finish off Ed Martinson's engine have been pledged! In just 48 hours or so this project is handled. This demonstrates to me the Model A spirit at it's finest. Thanks to all and we'll be sure to extend our thanks to those who have contributed in the appropriate way during KC 2000.

Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2000

Our donation Model A Engine has been completed by Ed Martinson, Antique Automotive Engineering in Denver, CO. To help make this great prize even better, we are seeking donations from caring members to add all the engine accessories and give the engine that "ready to drop in" look. If you have any of the following restored items and would be willing to donate them to the project, please email or phone me and then ship the item to the address below. We need:
Exhaust Manifold, Intake Manifold, Carburetor, Oil Return Pipe, Distributor, Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Wires, Water Pump, Fan, Fan Belt, Generator, Oil Filler Cap, Dip Stick
I'll monitor our responses, so we don't get more than than we need. We'll give each contributor special credit in our KC 2000 Convention Program. Thanks in advance for anything that you can do to help! -- Jim Spawn

This just in...Richard Dannebaum, Classic Glass Engraving, 122 Seabright Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95062 (831-423-2224) has generously donated a set of beautiful glass Windwings designed to fit 30-31 Deluxe Roadsters, Deluxe Roadster Pickups and/or Phaetons! These are beveled, etched, highly polished and are absolutely stunning.

They will be offered in our Silent Auction to ensure that the person getting them needs and wants them. The Silent Action will be at the KC 2000 booth located in the lobby of the Embassy Suites Hotel.

Contact Richard for windwings for all Model A styles.

Date: 1/6/00

We have talked about our efforts to obtain rides for those who are at KC 2000 without Model A's, especially the foreign visitors. We intend to handle this via our bulletin board to link up willing drivers with those who may need a ride on all the major tour events. Many of our own chapter members are very willing to take along others, and I know many regulars at the convention always look forward to offering a lift just to meet new people. While we certainly cannot promise everbody a ride, we will promise our best efforts. Our goal should be to get a ride for everybody who needs one. I'll have a short blurb about this in Issue # 7 of the Kansas City News.

Interest is booming right now. Bob Hess and I are getting lots of emails and phone calls with good questions about various aspects. It makes us even more excited. Bob is also receiving and processing registrations daily. We expect a big bunch by the first of the week from KC News subscribers. I'll sure keep you posted as we progress.

Subject: Registrations

Please know that our ace Registar, Bob Hess and his wife, both work full time and are not at home when the mail comes. He has received 4 slips from the postman instructing him to go to the post office to sign for Registered or Certified mail.

While this seems like an ideal way to hurry registrations, it does not, because he can't get to the post office until Saturday. So please....pass the word....don't send Registered or Certified....use Priority Mail. It will get there just as quick, it's a lot cheaper and it will be left in his mail box.

Thanks everyone!

Whoa...this just in. Vanguard Airlines has donated not one, yes two round trip tickets to anywhere that Vanguard Airlines flys!!! We don't know exactly how we will give these away yet. This will be decided at our Nov 11 planning meeting. But they won't be sold or raffled...they will be given away, in some format. Watch for more details. A special thank you to Ron and Barbara Anderson who obtained the donation from Vanguard.

Issue #5 of the Kansas City News will be to the printer this week and in the mail by next week.

9 Months to Go!

Our next planning meeting for KC 2000 will be on Thursday, October 14th at 7:00 p.m. We'll hold the meeting at the Embassy Suites Hotel-KCI. I sure hope many of you can make it. We've made lots of progress in several departments, but there is still much to do. It is hard to believe that this project, which seemed so far away, is now only 9 months off!

Over the grapevine and internet we have had communication from many MAFCA members and chapters. 32 cars are coming from Wisconsin; 30 cars are coming from Denver; 20+ cars are coming from Atlanta and list goes on. We have a success on our hands and it is up to us to put on a good party. Many wonderful doorprizes will be given out at KC 2000, some more special than others.

Here's a really good one...Carole Cote, California does outstanding woodgraining. She has donated her talent to woodgrain all the parts for one car! The lucky winner will ship all the parts requiring woodgraining to Carole prepaid. The parts must be stripped, primed and free of dents. Carole will do the woodgraining within 60 days and ship them back to the winner. We've seen Carole's work and can tell you that she does an outstanding job.

You say your car is complete and you don't need woodgraining? Fear not! This door prize has a value of $500 to $650 depending on the body style, so you can sell, trade or give it another person. Carole's husband is KC 2000 Chief Judge, Bill Cote and you can be assured that they know their stuff. Ticket sales for our Engine Raffle are coming along. The Wichita club sold 100 tickets and asked for another 100. Our own member, Otis Robins has done a great job selling tickets, as has Orpha Hargrave, Eldon and Shirley Dobbe and others. If you have tickets, get busy and sell them. If you need tickets, I'll have plenty at the KC 2000 Planning Meeting and at our October Heart of America Club Membership Meeting.

We still need many more members to help in various ways for KC 2000. Helpers will be needed for repair tent; car judging; traffic control and dozens of other jobs. Please dedicate yourself to volunteering and working during this exciting adventure. See you on Oct 14th!

I was in Denver yesterday and stopped by to see Steve Becker at Bert's Model A Ford Center and Ed Martinson at Antique Automotive Engineering.

1. Steve had just gotten back from the MARC National. He thinks they had 700 registrations. But he noticed many, many, many, KC 2000 decals in the windows of the A's.

2. Ed Martinson said that he had gotten two calls from people who said they have "no luck" at winning raffles, but want him to build or rebuild engines for them. Not bad considering that his name was only printed in the Kansas City News, the MAFCA web page, and on the ticket itself. His phone number was never printed.

3. Speaking of the MAFCA web site: The Santa Clara Valley Chapter has a "Going to Kansas City" web page!! It has a list of the participants, maps, itinerary, etc. 11 or 12 cars have already signed up to go with them. To look at their page go the MAFCA web page/Meets/National/KC 2000/Santa Clara etc.

4. Bob Hess reports good response on Promotional Items sales from the flyer in Issue #4 of Kansas City News.

5. Reminder: Heart of America Membership Meeting is Monday, Aug 16th. I have lots more raffle tickets to distribute and will bring them to the meeting. Don't forget our KC 2000 Planning Meeting on Thursday, August 19th at Embassy Suites.

Keep up all your good efforts!

KC 2000 MAFCA National Meet

Hosted by the Heart of America Model A Ford Club, with assistance from several Midwest area clubs, the KC 2000 Meet will be the first ever held in the Heart of America. The meet will show off some the history and scenery of the area, including the Grand Tour to St. Joseph, Missouri, where the Pony Express began and where Jesse James was killed. Other tours include the newly opened Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Factory, Harry S. Truman Library, KC Fountain Tour, Steamboat Arabia Museum, Station Casino and the City Market.

Planning is well underway to have a full-featured Model A Convention of Seminars, Fashion & Car Judging, Hill Climb Race and activities for the entire family. The Welcome Party is a "can't miss" event, so plan to arrive in KC in time for it.

Judging

From: Jim Spawn
Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 13:40:03 EST
Subject: Car Judging at KC 2000

After further discussions with Chief Judge Bill Cote, KC Liason Bob Hess, members of the judging standards committee, and several members of the MAFCA Board, we have elected to conduct the car judging inside the ballroom of the HQ Hotel, The Embassy Suites-KCI.

The size of the ballroom may require the cars to be platooned by category depending on the number of entries, but we feel this drawback is lesser than potential risks of the outdoor location. The times for the judging will be correct in the Convention Program Schedule that everybody will recieve upon check-in. We are extending the time estimated somewhat to make sure the movement of the cars in and out can be done carefully and without rushing things.

Caravans and Touring - Getting to and from Kansas City

I would like to know the names and contact source ( phone #, or e-mail address) of Northern Californians, Oregonians, and Washingtonians planning to drive their Model A's to KC this coming July. Perhaps we can join up somewhere en route and make several 4-5 car caravans for fun, safety, and adventure!
