KC. 2000 - July 10-15, 2000
Kansas City, Missouri

By Char Crawford, Chief Judge

From The Restorer - Nov/Dec 1999

[Red Line]

Follow the "Yellow Brick Road" in Wizard of Oz country to enjoy an exciting era fashion adventure. There are five ways you can be a part of this experience:

(1) Plan to observe and appreciate all the Model A era fashions that will be worn at KC 2000.

(2) Get prepared now to wear era fashions in Kansas City to some of the "happenings". If you would like to sew a reproduction outfit to wear and need some help, contact our Reproduction Resource Person, Pat Watson. She has many original era fashion patterns available to loan to other Model A'ers. Her address is 20125 Beach Dr., N.W., Stanwood, WA 98292-6105 Phone: 360652-9240; Email: bpwats@greatnorthern.net<. Her catalog is available for a small fee by contacting Pat. Pat will be conducting a fashion seminar at KC 2000 on Reproductions. Lynette Marcione, the Assistant Chief Judge, will lead a seminar on Shopping for Era Fashions. There will be a lot of information to help you with era fashions at KC 2000.

(3) If you have won a Best of Show Award or Award of Excellence in past years, you are invited to share your winning Model A fashion in a Parade of Model A Era Fashions of the Century. If you would prefer not to model the outfit yourself, you may ask a relative, neighbor or friend to wear it. If you wish to participate in the Parade, advise Orpha Hargrave, Host Fashion Coordinator. Her address is: 14409 Covington Road, Independence, Missouri, 64055. Her phone number is: 816-373-8160. Her email address is OrphaH@aol.com. Please list your name, address, club, which award and.when and where the award was given, who will be wearing it and a brief description of the outfit. Your information must be received by June 10, 2000. Won't it be wonderful to see again the award winning fashions from past Model A Meets?

(4) Would you like to be a fashion entrant at KC2000? Here are some suggestions:
• Order a Fashion Guidelines from MAFCA to study or borrow one from your club library. It is necessary and you will find it helpful to study the Guidelines carefully before you enter.
• The Restorer cover jacket lists several era fashion videos available through MAFCA which can be helpful to you.
• Ask other Model A friends to help. One of the best things about entering to be judged in era fashions is all the new Model A friends you will get to know. It is fun!

Planning Your Outfit:

Remember, there are five major areas in era fashion Judging. To enter you will need:

A. Major Garment: the basic body apparel worn. Examples: suit, trousers and shirt, skirt and blouse, swimsuit, uniform, etc.

B. Headgear/Hairdo: all hats, hairstyles, hair ornaments head scarves .

C. Coordinated Apparel: 2 areas:
(1) Outer garments - coats, jackets, vests, gloves, ties suspenders, belts, etc. and
(2) under garments.

D. Accessories: you will need 3 items (no more) for judging. Children need only two items. These are non clothing items- purses, wallets, jewelry, coins,
handkerchiefs, sports equipment, canes, etc.

E. Footgear: anything worn on the feet - shoes, slippers, socks, stockings, garters, spats, etc.
The Fashion Guidelines explain this information in detail.

After acquiring these items you are ready to enter. It is suggested that you research every detail for "overall appearance" points including (where appropriate) makeup, nails, sideburns, mustaches, etc. Clothing that is pressed, clean and in good repair will give you more points. Coordination is extremely important to your "overall appearance" score.

When you register for the Kansas City Meet, check the appropriate box to indicate your desire to become an entrant. The Host Coordinator, Orpha Hargrave, will send~you a fashion entrant's form. Pill it out completely and mail it in to the Coordinator before the deadline, June 10, 2000.

(5) Would you like to participate as a fashion judge? To serve as a Fashion Judge:

Order the Fashion Guidelines from the MAFCA Office if you do not have a copy, Guidelines must include the 1994 and 1996 updates. Order the appropriate Fashion tests from the MAFCA office (250 S. Cypress, La Habra, CA 90631) Tests are free of charge. All tests are open book tests based solely on the Fashion Guidelines

1. Take Test 1 (Section 1 - "General Guidelines") and send it to the MAFCA office. When you have passed Test 1, you may ask to serve as an Apprentice Judge at the Meet. After you have served as an apprentice one time, you should take the remaining five Fashion Area Tests (Major Garment, Headgear, Coordinated Apparel, Accessories, and Footgear), When you have passed these tests you will be certified "Judge" (next level after "Apprentice").

2. To become a "Senior Judge", having passed all six tests, you will need to judge in four different "areas" at four different sanctioned meets.

3. To become a "Master Judge" you will need to have judged in all five areas at five different sanctioned meets and have conducted a fashion seminar at a sanctioned meet or have published an era fashion article in The Restorer or other approved publication.

An accurate record of tests passed, judging experience, and requirements completed for higher judging certification will be kept at the MAFCA office. Updates wilX be annually. Ail fashion judges must judge in least one National or two other sanctioned meets in any five-year period in order to k their certification current. Be sure to sign to be a judge at the KC 2000 Meet on registration form and I will send you a special form to fill out so that you may judge in area you have not judged before. The completed form will provide me with necessary information

Era Fashion Judging is the best way I know to really learn about era fashions.

Let's get together in Kansas City, travel down the Yellow Brick Road and have unforgettable era fashion experience. Rumor has it that the Lion, the Tin Man and Scarecrow will assist the Fashion Show participants. Don't miss it!
