WHERE IS THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE MODEL A?

Question: I just bought a nice 1931 coupe that has an odd "VIN" on its Iowa title, a number assigned by the Iowa DMV. I thought that I would get the actual serial number off of the engine block, only to find that the number boss is bare. No number, no anything -- just smooth metal. I have heard that the serial number is also stamped on the chassis in some hard to reach location. Where would that be?

Answer: Dear John, The original engine number was stamped on the upper frame rail on the left side of the car, about where your left foot would rest. In order to see the number though, the body and running board splash apron would have to be removed as they hide the number.
