I am a retired hairdresser who also has worked as a teacher's aide. Married since 1961 I have two daughters and three grandsons. For reasons that we no longer remember, we started looking for an "Old" car in 1990. It was just good luck that we bought a Model A. The 'mistress', as we named her, (because I knew my husband would ([a) be spending all his spare time with her. (b) be buying her presents and (c) showing her off to all his friends,) was a pretty sad sight. A '31' Town sedan painted maroon with a brush. It had no back seat and the front seat was a quilt stapled to the spring frame, but it ran. The owner assured us that it was in tip top shape (a song you've all heard before) it just needed a new interior. He had the springs for the back seat and lots of extra parts he would bring to us. We drove it home and four days later three seat springs (none of which fit our car) and a box of rust was on our porch. When we went to a local part store it was suggested that we join the Acorn A's Model A club who could help us get the car in shape. This started our Model A life and we never looked back. We didn't expect the warmth and expert help so freely given by all these strangers who would come to be our friends. So far we have owned six Model As, the Town sedan, a Tudor, and a coupe, built a pickup, a deluxe delivery, and most recently a speedster. The Tudor, Pickup and Coupe all have new homes, thank heaven, we had filled up the driveway and garage. In 1991 we attended our first Roundup in Eureka. As we wandered around the hotel I chanced on entrants waiting to be judged in these awesome era clothes and I was hooked. I bought clothing (some era, some not) bought the Fashion Guidelines, studied entered and learned. Always being helped by other entrants and judges. Of course my favorite was to do the fingerwaved styles on anyone who would sit still. I was eventually encouraged to take the judging tests and passed to become an apprentice judge. I loved being an entrant so much that I decided to alternate, judging one year and being judged the next. When I attended a NWRG in Washington I won a basket of patterns and fabric in the raffle so I think I will give reproductions a try next. I encourage anyone interested in fashion to give our new Model A Era category a try. It is perfect for anyone who would like to join fashions for the first time. I love doing research and I have acquired a lot of material related to the era. I am currently a master judge. I am looking forward to being on the Era Fashion Committee. I hope to see you all at the judging table.
